My Tip For Wearing A Skirt & New Outfit Post

I've received a few requests about how to style & make skirts work.  Granted they're not as easy as throwing on a dress as you've got to think about what top to team it with but there are some lovely skirts out there.  So if you love skirts or have some hanging in your wardrobe that you just can't make work then here's my number one tip - team it with a belt!

For me I find that by adding a belt it instantly brings the look together & adds that finishing touch you can feel is missing when wearing a top & skirt combo.  Of course there are many different styles & widths of belts about but having tried a fair few I've found that my preference is to opt for a thick belt (around 3" wide) & preferably elasticated.

Now when you hear the word 'elasticated' I get that it may not sound that appealing (the first thing that always comes into my mind is elasticated waisted trousers!!) but the beauty of such a belt is that it fits perfectly, holds you in to create a flattering waist plus & most importantly it stays put!!  Yup no huge gap at the back whenever you move around & it of course holds your top in too so you're not forever moving said belt back into position or tucking your top back in!!!

I've got two elasticated belts one that I brought a few years ago from Zara and is covered in silver studs & the other that I brought from H&M last year with small gold studs.  Of course typically I can't find anything similar on the high street but there are some great elasticated numbers around that are a little plainer but will still do the job & of course if you fancy adding a bit of detail you could always customise it with some studs brought off eBay!!!

So here's some beauties that have caught my eye.  Starting with this great one from H&M that has some lovely black detailing.

Or if you fancy something a bit more bling-tastic then how about this sequinned one, which would look amazing teamed with a black maxi & camisole.

Keeping with the gold detailing, I love this one from New Look, perfect for wear day or night.

Or for a much more toned down look then this Mango one has just a little bit of gold detailing on the buckle.

Similar in style is this pack of two from New Look, a total bargain for two belts!

Again similar in design but with more focus on the buckle is this one from New Look.

Or for something quite plain that would be perfect for customising then what about this one from Marks & Spencer.

As would this one from H&M.

Finally here's what I'm wearing today, quite a simple outfit as I literally have a hundred & one things to try & cross off my 'to do' list including packing for our holidays next week :-)

Shirt - Massimo Dutti
Jeans - Zara
Ballet Flats - Zara

Chambray & Denim

Shirt - Gap Now £27.99

So how do you make your skirts work for you?  Do you have a style tip you'd like to share, I'd love to know what works for you.

Have a great day & see you in the morning.

  1. You really suits your belts! Sadly a big bust means I look like a sack of spuds tied in the middle. I suspect this is a trick for the neater ladies x

    1. Hi Gillian have you tried wearing a belt lower down on your hips? It might be worth a try if you haven't as this can work for large busts!

  2. You look fab with a belt, Jane, but I have to be careful with thus look as it can be very unflattering on me! I agree with Gillian, actually, I think I'm a little too curvy to carry it off like you do. Love your outfit today. Lynne xx

  4. Do you know, I am a very bad belter (if there is such a word?) I need to experiment more, and the elastic belt idea sounds perfect, because they do always move around. I shall have to pop into H&M for that great priced black one, and try harder! Helen xx

    1. That black H&M one does look fab Helen. Belts always used to drive me mad if not worn through belt loops but now I've discovered elasticated ones there's no stopping me!!!
Let me know how you get on.

  5. I use a clever weave-type buckle belt to cinch up an oversized (but forever-faithful) jersey maxi dress. Think it was a Debenhams purchase a few years ago, and it's fantastic as no matter what I've eaten, the clever belt can be adjusted to provide a suitable hole for me. Love it when clothes work with a body, not against :)
