Taking A Look At Penhaligons & WIWT

Morning ladies today I want to talk perfume.  I don't know about you but I love wearing perfume that's a little bit different & unusual to the norm & the memories that different scents can evoke. In fact whenever we go away on holiday you'll always find me in duty free trying the various perfumes out to try & see if I can find a new signature scent.  So when I was recently contacted by Penhaligon's, a British perfumer I was intrigued to learn more.

Now I must admit I'd not heard of the brand before they contact me, but on taking a look at their website I discovered that they have in fact been around for some 144 years when their first scent 'Hamman Bouquet' was created in 1872 & have over the years been awarded 3 Royal Warrants - by Queen Alexandra in 1903, the Duke of Edinburgh in 1958 & in 1988 by The Prince of Wales.

With their mission to continue the work of their founder William Penhaligon & 'carry on his incredible legacy of creative & innovative perfumery, challenging the traditions of the art & seeking new ways to interpret elegant' they're definitely a perfumer to take note of & I love that fact that all their scents are still made in England, using the finest rare ingredients.  With even their signature fragrance bottle still being produced to the original design with clear glass & a distinctive ribbon-wrapped stopper.

My Midlife Fashion, Penhaligons, Endymion, Penhaligons Endymion Concentre eau de perfume

Plus they even have high street stores in various cities, including their Covent Garden store, which I just so happened to stumble upon during a recent visit to London.  So I'm amazed I'd not heard of them before.

In order that I could get to know the brand a little further & discover more about their scents I was very kindly sent a scent library which contains ten samples of their most popular scents.  Ranging from 5 scents that are aimed at ladies to offer feminine, sensual & exotic perfumes to 5 more masculine scents that, whilst produced for the men in our lives can also be worn by women too.

In order to get accustomed to the new fragrances I spent a few weeks wearing each one for a couple of days & have to say I loved them all.  Of course several were more to my taste than others but none were too overpowering or sweet/floral that I couldn't wear them, which as someone who can suffer with migraines from certain scents says a lot.

Personally I have always favoured a more spicy fragrance, with most of the perfumes I wear containing base notes of either Incense or Bergamot.  So it's probably no surprise that my favourite of the 10 samples was Endymion which contains Bergamot, Sage & Lavender as it's head notes, Geranium & Suede Accord as it's heart notes & Leather, Incense & Nutmeg as it's base notes - you could say this was made for me!

Penhaligon's describe the scent as 'spicy & fresh' that 'is a fragrance of contrasts, sensual, light & dark, velvety, sweet & sharp'.  Originally created in 2003 they have recently launched Endymion Concentre a luxurious interpretation of the original scent, which the company continue to describe as 'a fusion of spices, leather & florals that opens with notes of sage & lavender to pearl the sensuality of suede layered with geranium.  That as it warms to the skin, leather notes intensify with hints of creamy nutmeg mixed with incense for a base that is both sweet & seductive'.

As you may have gathered from the above description this fragrance is unisex & is based on the tragic Ancient Greek love story of a young handsome shepherd called Endymion, the son of Zeus who would look after his flock of sheep in the hills of Elis & is said to have been the first mortal to observe the movement of the moon.  Luna (the moon goddess who drove her chariot across the heavens every night, taking with her the light of moon) would gaze upon Endymion's beauty & filled with longing pleaded with Zeus for the right to his son.  Eventually Zeus conceded & permitted Luna to place Endymion (would had fallen in love with her as she crossed the skies) into an eternal slumber where he would remain ageless & deathless so his beauty would be preserved & whom she visited every night in his slumber.

In fact Penhaligon's also produce a fragrance called Luna that compliments Endymion, which is a fresh floral perfume that opens 'with the bitter freshness of orange bigarade, with the heart unfolding with the crisp lightness of juniper berry, rounded off with the sensuality of a dark woody base'.

I've not tried the Luna fragrance but it's definitely on my wish list & if I happen to find myself passing one of their stores I definitely intend to give it a try as I just love the idea of his & her fragrances that compliment each other & as I've mentioned previously my hubby loves all things moon & space related so I'm having trouble keeping his hands off my new fragrance!

My Midlife Fashion, Penhaligons, Endymion, Penhaligons Endymion Concentre eau de perfume

Like other luxury brands Penhaligon's also produce complimentary bath & shower gel as well as deodorant, shaving cream & aftershave balm so it would make a lovely range to either treat yourself to or if you're ever struggling for gift inspiration for your other half.  You can see the full range here.

They even create gorgeous scented candles for the home (see here) that are packed with essential oils so I think these are also going to require further investigation as you can never have enough candles can you?!

My Midlife Fashion, Penhaligons, Endymion, Penhaligons Endymion Concentre eau de perfume

Back to today & I'm wearing my Monks on vacation maxi skirt (I've folded the waistband over to make it more of a midi) with a new cross over tee from Marks & my trusted biker.

So what do you think ladies?  Have you ever tried any of Penhaligon's fragrances?  Or is it a brand that like me until a few weeks ago you've not heard of?  If you have tried some of the products, which ones do you recommend?  I'd love to know which are your favourite scents & also if you've used their scented candles.  If so would you recommend them & are they particularly long lasting?  It says on their website that they last approximately 30 hours which I think is pretty generous but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Enjoy your day & I'll see you in the morning.

My Edit Of The Best Embroidered Dresses & WIWT For A Special Occasion

Morning ladies.  Today I'm thinking ahead to holidays & also those glorious days back home when the sun shines, the sky is blue & temperatures start to soar.

I don't know about you but as soon as I step off the plane in Majorca & see all these women looking effortlessly cool & rocking the boho look I have a huge urge to ditch my favoured tailored pieces & wear only floaty embroidered pieces that look effortless & need little to no styling or accessories.

So with this in mind I thought it would be fun to take a look at what's out there on the high street & get us all in that holiday mood.

Back to today & it's my nephew's Christening so I'm bringing out my French Connection dress to play again & this time teaming it with a long length cream blazer to change the look from what I wore for Ladies Day.

As always I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Have a fab day, I'm off to be a proud mama & watch my son become a Godfather :-)

See you tomorrow.

Sales Tactics With The Dressing Room & WIWT

Morning ladies today I thought it would be fun to talk sales shopping & to see if anyone has a particular practice they follow when dealing with the never ending emails & alerts pinging into your inbox informing you that sales mania has officially started?

This year I'm trying to be sensible & not get distracted by bargains that are tempting just because of their price (yup I think it's safe to say we've all been there haven't we?!!) but instead purchase a couple of investment pieces that because they're now in the sale have not only become obtainable but will add something special to my wardrobe & that I can also justify the cost of as I can sell a couple of similar pieces from my wardrobe that are similar but not by any means on a parr (this might just be my logic for justifying the odd purchase or two ;-0 but it kind of makes sense!).

Because of the lack of summer this year I'm hoping this plan is going to be easier to adhere to.  As we've all no doubt invested in a lot of high street pieces in the hope that summer will arrive that have still yet to be worn.  So another H&M beauty no matter how stunning seems a little ridiculous when you've already got several pieces that are looking like they're only going to get an airing abroad if our British summer doesn't get a move on!

We all know that sales time means the opportunity to bag yourself a bargain & any true fashionista will love the knowledge that they've snagged a stunning item at a fraction of the cost.  So with this in mind it's the perfect time for looking further afield at brands you might not normally think of shopping at & to also start thinking ahead to next season for pieces you can wear in a couple on months.  Not to mention the holy grail items that can come out to play all year round.

One sale that is DEFINITELY worth checking out is The Dressing Room, an award winning boutique with an online presence that offers amazing brands with pieces that little bit different from your mainstream high street at affordable prices.  So seeing as their sale of 50% off all sale items starts tomorrow (although mark downs have already started!) it couldn't be a better time to take a peek!

I've been lucky enough to have a preview of their sale & I thought I'd share with you my top picks, which I've divided into two categories - summer classics that will last a lifetime & are not only timeless & chic but are also the perfect foundation for any summer wardrobe.  And secondly wardrobe staples that can be worn all year round with a few tweaks.

So let's start with summer classics.  I think you will agree that all of the below items are pieces that you would reach for year after year.  From a simple breton shift dress to a timeless white lace kaftan.  Plus the beauty of these pieces is that not only would they make the perfect capsule wardrobe they only need the simplest of accessories to complete your look - a simple straw panama, some statement flats & a straw basket & you really would be good to go.

Summer Classics, My Midlife Fashion, Summer Classics, The Dressing Room, St albans, Twist & Tango Annie Lace Dress, Great Plains Whistler Check Shirt, American Vintage likastreet boatneck dress, lily and lionel stella kaftan, lily and lionel lani leopard print maxi dress, blue pearl betty dress, reiko carly long sleeve playsuit, mercy delta anthenan pom pom silk scarf

Then moving onto wardrobe staples - think statement blouses for wearing both day or night that can be teamed with skinny jeans, leather effect leggings or cigarette pants.  Simply finish with heels & a clutch & you've got the perfect look for a night out with your other half or the girls.

Plus who doesn't love a slogan knit jumper?!  Perfect for teaming under a biker jacket or tuxedo & this military denim shirt has just the right amount of detailing to justify purchasing.  As we all know that little bit of extra detailing can really transform an outfit & turn it from ordinary to extraordinary!

Finally skinny combats are perfect for dressing up or down - team with a biker jacket & trainers for day or heels & a blazer for evening - all hardworking pieces you'll wonder how on earth you ever lived without.

Wardrobe Staples, My Midlife Fashion, Wardrobe classics, the dressing room st albans, custom made theodora blouse, mercy delta clevedon jumbo safari blouse, american vintage sila valley long sleeve shirt, maison scotch preppy pullover, twist and tango lexi trouser, frame denim le military shirt

Having previously worked with The Dressing Room they recently got in touch to see if I'd be interested in styling 3 sale pieces.  So being someone who loves the opportunity to play dress up I didn't hesitate in saying yes.

Most of us love a stripe or two & have no doubt got several slightly different styled breton tops hanging in our wardrobe but one thing I don't have is a classic stripe shift dress.  I'm wearing a S in the dress, which like a breton top can easily be styled many ways - team with an oversized cardigan, biker jacket or denim jacket on cooler days or for warmer days simply pair with a panama & straw basket with ballet pumps or trainers.

My Midlife Fashion, The Dressing Room St Albans, American Vintage Breton dress, h and m straw panama, steve madden sandals, wicker shopping basket

Panama - H&M, similar here
Sandals - Steve Madden
Basket - Bought in Majorca, similar here

The next item I chose to style was this check cross over top, which is made of the softest fabric &  has a lovely weight to it.  Again a multi purpose top that can be dressed down with boyfriend jeans & trainers or styled up like I have below.

My Midlife Fashion, The Dressing Room St Albans, Great Plains check crossover top, boden soft suede clutch, zara tie up heels, zara cigarette pants

Cigarette Pants - Zara, similar here
Sandals - Zara, similar here
Bag - Boden

And finally for my outfit for today I just couldn't resist styling these combat trousers - a great all year item for any wardrobe as they're a lovely thick cotton that means they'll be perfect layered with a thick knit for winter.  I just couldn't decide whether to style them up or down but in the end decided to go with a mix between the two.

My Midlife Fashion, The Dressing Room St Albans, Marks and Spener lace trim camisole, zara leather biker jacket, next leopard print court shoes, black combat slim fit trousers

Camisole - Marks & Spencer

So ladies what do you think?  Are you in agreement with my sales rules this season or are you opting for a different tack?  If so what are the rules you intend to follow.  I'd love to hear if you have any fail safe rules that keep you on the straight & narrow not to mention what's got you clicking the button.  With the appalling weather we've had so far this season there's no doubt going to be some great bargains out there tempting us to stray.

Talking of which if I've featured anything you like above remember that sizes are limited & going to be flying out.  You can see all the other pieces to have been reduced by 50% by clicking here as well as Deryane's top 10 picks here.

Happy Friday & happy shopping - what more could you want with your Friday cheeky glass of vino?! ;-)

See you in the morning.

Dresses For Cooler Days & WIWT

Morning ladies.  Today I thought it would be fun to look at dresses that aren't necessarily ones we'd wear when the temperatures are soaring but more for those days when its not too cold or too warm & we feel like getting the legs out.

Now whilst there's lots of ways of making more lightweight summer dresses work on cooler days (a maxi teamed with a biker jacket) or a summer dress worn under a denim jacket/oversized cardigan, if you just feel like throwing on a dress & not having to give it a second thought you're not going to go wrong with a denim dress.  Plus come the cooler months it can be worn with opaque tights & layered with a cardigan/biker jacket making it ever practical not to mention that word us women love when explaining *justifying* a purchase - useful ;-)

And here's just a few ways you can accessorise a denim dress.

1 Dress 3 Ways, My Midlife fashion, 1 dress 3 ways, boden pom pom sandals, hush leather star trainers, cocobay hipanema blue bracelet, uniqlo ones straw fedora, esprit epc denim dress, john lewis plait toaster bag, mango striped textured cardigan, john lewis pieces suede across body bag, hudson tala tan ankle boots

There's so many denim dresses on the high street at the moment I've been spoilt for choice of what to include but after much oohing & ahhing here's my top picks (just click on image for more details).

As always I love hearing your thoughts.  Plus don't forget to check out Boden's latest offer (see here) to grab that bargain you've been eyeing up all season!

My Pick Of Off The Shoulder Dresses, Another Sneaky Purchase & WIWT

Morning ladies now the other day we looked at off the shoulder tops (see here) & I showed you a few suggetions on how you can style them both for day or evening.

So today I thought we should look at off the shoulder dresses as I don't know about you but we're fully into holiday countdown mode & this style of dress is perfect for hot sunny days & evenings.  Whether it be dressed down for a day of sightseeing/shopping ;-) or dressed up for a leisurely evening enjoying local cuisine & the last of the sun's rays before it sets for the evening.  You can guarantee this style of dress will keep you cool both in terms of looks & temperature.

Here's just a few suggestions on how I'd style this type of dress.

1 Dress 3 Ways, My Midlife Fashion, I Dress 3 Ways, John Lewis Weekend Collection Stretch denim jacket, Topshop embroidered bardot midi dress, uniqlo ines straw fedora, boden pom pom sandal, ted baker leeban sandals, the dressing room the butterfly clutch, hipanema oh my silver bracelet, john lewis weekend collection multi beaded stripe clutch, Miss KG Elisa lace Up Stiletto sandals

And here's my edit from those currently doing the rounds on the high street.  I just love this style teamed with embroidery but I think my favourite just has to be that black maxi number.  So much so I'm very tempted to get clicking that button :-0

Finally before I share my outfit for today I just wanted to show you a little purchase that I made yesterday.  Ever since the issue of free plastic bags has been phased out I've been on the lookout for the perfect canvas shopper & low & behold I found it yesterday :-)

The White Company Do Small Things Grey Heart Shopper

Back to today & I'm breaking out my ruffle-tastic top I bought from Finery several months ago.

My Midlife Fashion, Finery London Charteris Woven Ruffle Front t Shirt, zara distressed boyfriend jeans, the womens society boutique sequin espadrilles

Top - Finery London £35, also available in white here
Jeans - Hush £75

So ladies what do you think?  Are you a lover of this type of dress & tempted to get clicking the 'buy me' button or maybe you've recently purchased a dress in this style & have it tucked away in your wardrobe ready for your holidays?  Or perhaps you're wary of this type of dress & unsure of which underwear to wear (you can see my suggestions here).

As always I love reading your thoughts.

Right I'm off to make a start on the Father's Day celebrations for hubby.  Enjoy your day, don't forget it's the last day to take advantage of Boden's current discount (see here) & I'll be back in the morning.

WIWT - Mixing & Matching With Stylish Separates

Morning ladies, today I wanted to show you a couple of new pieces I've been lucky enough to have been sent by Monks On Vacation.

Now you may recall that I reviewed a few of their pieces a few months ago (see here) & since then I can honestly say that their Popper Jacket & Rushy Pants are now my go to in terms of lounge wear.  I think we can all agree that whilst most of us will love the excuse of dressing up there is nothing nicer than shutting that door & slipping into something comfy & these pieces are not only incredibly comfortable they have the added benefit of being stylish to, not to mention they hold their shape well.

So having fallen head over in heels in love with the pieces I'd previously reviewed I was intrigued to see if other items would live up to my high expectations.

As you will no doubt know by now I love a monochrome outfit or two so with the idea that I could intermix the pieces I'd previously received I decided to pick their long sleeve slouch top & their Madeleine skirt, which has the added advantage that it can be worn at various lengths turning it from a  maxi skirt, to a midi skirt to above the knee.

My Midlife fashion, monks on vacation, monks on vacation long sleeve slouch top, monks on vacation madeleine skirt, zara leather wrap belt, golden goose super star trainers

As you'll see from the above photo the cut & fit of the garments is exquisite & they really don't need many accessories to finish the outfit.  I've kept the above look extremely simple & just added a leather wrap around belt for a little more definition on my waist.

Like the previously pieces their quality is amazing & of the highest quality & as you'll see from the below image the slouch top drapes beautifully.  It's a gorgeous light weight fabric consisting of 50% cotton & 50% polyester that is loosely fitting on the body with fitted sleeves & raw seams to give it a modern feel.  For anyone that likes to cover up in the sun this would make the perfect beach cover - stylish & would keep you covered & protected but lightweight enough not to leave you sweltering in the heat.

As for the skirt it has just the right amount of lycra to ensure the skirt fits your body shape perfectly without being skintight & too clingy.  Changing the length couldn't be easier either & is just a matter of folding over the waistband to your desired length.  I'm wearing a S in both items & would say these are perfect for a UK 8-10.

Not only do these items make a stylish outfit when teamed together they're also perfect for mixing with other items too.

In the below picture I've teamed the slouch top with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans, statement flats & a classic straw panama.

My Midlife Fashion, Monks on vacation white long sleeve slouch top, h and m panama straw hat, coco bay hipanmea tahiti bracelet, zara distressed boyfriend jeans, golden goose superstar trainers

Panama - H&M, similar here
Jeans - Zara, similar here
Shoes - Zara, similar here

Then for today's outfit I've folded the waistband of the skirt slightly to turn it from a maxi to a midi & styled it with my leather biker jacket & a simple patterned top with trainers to dress the look down.

My Midlife Fashion, Monks on vacation madeleine skirt, golden goose superstar trainers, zara leather biker jacket, zara patterned sleeveless top

Biker Jacket - Zara
Top - Zara
Trainers - Golden Goose

Monochrome, My Midlife Fashion, Shop My Style, Monks On Vacation madeleine skirt, hush leather star trainers, john lewis betsy leather biker jacket, john lewis weekend collection lavinia tile print shirt

Biker Jacket - John Lewis £199
Blouse - John Lewis £49
Trainers - Hush £115

So ladies what do you think?  In my view both pieces are perfect wardrobe multi-taskers that are not only stylish & timeless but comfortable & practical too.  You can see Monks on Vacations full range of clothing, including their latest release here.  I'd love to hear what you think.

Right time to get on & get the day started.  Hope everyone has a great Saturday - a normal one for us with the usual Saturday chores & karate run but counting the hours until it's time to chill & watch a film or two.

See you in the morning & don't forget Boden's latest offer see here for details.
