Afternoon Tea The Laura Ashley Way + WIWT - Timeless Summer Style

My Midlife Fashion, Laura Ashley tea room, shirley

Morning ladies & happy Monday.  Before I share what I'm wearing today I thought I'd show you a few pictures that I took last Wednesday when I was lucky enough to be invited to the official opening of Laura Ashley's first tearoom.  As you will no doubt have gathered from following my blog &  Instagram account I love afternoon tea - I don't think there's anything more decadent than enjoying dainty sandwiches & delicious cakes served on beautiful & feminine china & it's definitely one of my favourite things to do with my mum & sister & also my girlfriends.  So I was delighted to be invited to the event & even more excited when I discovered the tearoom isn't far from where I live :-)

Situated at the Corus Regency Hotel just on the outskirts of Solihull with plenty of parking, the tearoom is the first of it's kind, with Laura Ashley hoping to open more venues in the near future.  As you would expect the tearoom is beautifully decorated in Laura Ashley wallpaper & furnishings, with a luxurious & tranquil atmosphere.

One thing I really loved about the venue was the tearoom has it's own separate entrance so you don't have to enter the hotel & due to it's size (not too big or too small to be crowded in) it felt like a real treat, which of course afternoon tea is.  I had the vegetarian option, which as you can see from the photos above had a gorgeous selection of finger sandwiches & the most delicious cakes & scones - the gluten free brownie is to die for!  They even have their own cardboard boxes for you to take any leftovers home - which the hubby devoured as soon as I walked through the door!

So ladies it's definitely worth a visit if you live locally or are passing via the motorway & fancy a treat.  In fact I loved it so much that I've already mentioned it to my mum & sister for our next meet up as handily it just so happens to be half way between where we all live so it's bound to become a regular meet up venue......oh the hardship! ;-)

Back to today & I'm styling some summer classics in a colour combination that's never going to go out of fashion.

Stealing Jennifer Lawrence's Style + WIWT - Lace & Denim

Jennifer Lawrence

Morning ladies, for this month's style steal I thought we'd take inspiration from the above image of Jennifer Lawrence.

Not only does it include a lot of wardrobe staples, some of which you've probably already got hanging in your wardrobe.  It also makes the perfect stylish & practical outfit for jetting off on holiday.

So let's crack on & shop the high street to re-create the above look.

First up the ever useful panama - a 'must have' if you're heading to warmer climates, not only for sun protection but they really do pull the most simplest of looks together & of course they're ideal for hiding beach hair under.  I have the below panama & it's definitely coming away with me plus it comes in 4 different sizes so perfect for those of us who usually find it difficult getting a hat to fit.

marks and spencer handwoven panama hat

I probably don't need to tell you the benefits of a classic black blazer.  I know I'd be lost without mine for dressing up or down outfits.  Plus of course it's a timeless addition that can so easy be worn for work, rest & play.  If you don't already own one then keep to a simple single breasted blazer that won't date & keep the detailing plain.  Although if you want something with a little wow factor then consider swapping the plain black buttons for some gold ones that you can easily buy from a local haberdashery store or eBay.

Marks and Spencer 1 button longline jacket

Of course most of us love a stripe or two & this simple monochrome short sleeve tee would be perfect for recreating Jennifer's look & could also easily be teamed with denim or white shorts whilst on your holiday to create another outfit.

Mango Organic Cotton TShirt

As for the trousers - if you're flying long-haul or just want to go with comfort then these tapered jersey joggers would be ideal.

Marks and Spencer Jersey Tapered Joggers

Or for something a little smarter, what about these cropped kick flares.  I have the navy version & love them, plus they're also really comfortable to wear so ideal for travelling.  You could also team them with a pretty cami like this one, to create an evening look.

Then finally shoes - I can't say I'm loving the ones Jennifer has teamed with her outfit.  Personally I think either a simple pair of white trainers like the ones below would work better.

Veja Esplar Trainer

Or if you prefer a sandal these cross over mules would look equally fab & of course prove extremely useful during the course of your holiday.

Marks and spencer cross over mule sandals

Back to today & after a couple of busy day's celebrating our son's 18th birthday we're having a relatively quiet one.  So a chilled out day calls for a simple outfit of a pretty white top & jeans - oh & some glitter-tastic ballet pumps ;-)

So ladies what are your thoughts on this month's style steal?  Is it a look you fancy re-creating?  Perhaps you've got similar items already hanging in your wardrobe & plan on copying the look.  Or maybe it's got you thinking about what to wear when you jet off on your holidays or even inspiration to create something similar but for a smarter occasion.  As always I love hearing your thoughts.

Enjoy your Sunday & as always I'll see you in the morning.

Oops I've Been 'Clicking That Button' + A Fab Discount Code + WIWT

J Crew Skinny Stretch Cargo Pant With Zippers

Skinny Stretch Cargo Pant With Zippers - now reduced by 50%

Morning ladies, I've been suffering with a bit of a twitchy finger so I thought today I'd update you on what's got me 'clicking that button'.  But before I start you know that cashmere off the shoulder jumper I recently confessed to - well it's now reduced by 50% here!

As you will probably have gathered by now since the end of last year I've developed a huge love of all things J Crew - what can I say I love their tailored understated pieces, that really won't date so makes the justification of the spend that little bit easier.

Plus as I've mentioned several times they have the best sales, where I've managed to get the huge proportion of my purchases at seriously reduced prices.  I can't stress enough how it's definitely worth taking a peek at their sales section, at least once a week as they have stock & sizing coming back in on a regular basis.  I think I've managed with a bit of stalking to get every item that had sold out in my size by hitting the refresh button several times a day.  If you're tempted you can see what's currently in their sale here.

The other reason I love the brand is that if you sign up to receive their newsletter you'll receive regular discount codes so even the full priced items I've generally managed to get for 20% off.  Which leads me onto the items that have found a new home in my wardrobe.

When I recently popped to London I naturally took at peek in store where not only were they in full sales mode but they were also offering 30% off all full priced items #happydays :-)  Unfortunately for me they didn't have my size in a couple of the purchases so hubby was a very happy man & I just came away with the above cargo pants, which are a great all year round wardrobe addition that can be dressed up or down.

J Crew Everyday Shirt in End on End Cotton

Of course I couldn't stop thinking about the items that got away so after a few days of realising I 'needed' those pieces I looked online to discover my sizes were in stock but the offer of 30% off was only in store only.  Cue a call to their ever helpful customer services & they kindly agreed to match the offer.  Hence the above tailored shirt was purchased in a heartbeat.  Along with the below boho top, that is quite tailored compared to a lot of the boho tops out there & is just idea for teaming with shorts or jeans or even cropped trousers for a smarter look.

j Crew Embroidered Linen Cotton Top

Embroidered Linen Cotton Top - now reduced by 50%

And seeing as the below cross body bag was reduced by 50% I also snapped this up.  I don't know a bout you but I find these little bags so useful for days when you're going to be on your feet & need your hands free.  Not to mention they're much kinder on my back than carrying a large full tote!

J Crew Signet Bag In Italian Leather

I also realised my wardrobe was missing a small navy cross body so the below beauty has also been snapped up.

Iris and Ink Leather Shoulder Bag

Back to today & I'm off to the launch of Laura Ashley's first Tea Room, which I'm really looking forward to.  Especially as it features one of my favourite interior stores as well as one of my favourite meals - afternoon tea so it should be fun & no doubt my head will be brimming with lots of interior inspiration by tonight - hubby is already worried!  So in honour of the invite I've decided to wear another sales purchase - this broderie skirt that I'm planning on wearing in the cooler months with a biker & cashmere crew neck jumper.

So that's this month's confessions out of the way.  As you can see I've generally gone for items that can be worn all year round, as whilst I'm loving summer my head in terms of purchases is firmly thinking about next season.  How about you?  Have you been busy 'clicking the button' & if so are you thinking summer holidays or like me cooler Autumn days?  I'd love to hear.

Enjoy your day ladies & I'll see you tomorrow & for any one who loves La Roche-Posay as much as me there's currently 30% off all their skincare here.

Happy Monday ladies.  To kick start the beginning of a new week I'm bringing out a sales bargain I snapped up at the end of the January sales - such a fab price & I just couldn't resist the metallic stripes.  Plus it's perfect for kicking the Monday blues to touch!

So I'm letting my metallic stripes do all the talking today & keeping the rest of my outfit pretty neutral with cropped jeans & block heeled sandals.

I'm guessing this week marks the end of school for summer for a lot of you, so no doubt those with school aged children are counting down the days.  I know when our son was at school being one of the youngest in his year he was always desperate for the school holidays by this stage & seemed to catch any bug going. Oh how I miss the long summer holidays when he could just kick back & relax - still not long till our summer holiday :-)

Here's to a fab week for us all.  See you tomorrow.

New Into Store + WIWT

My Midlife Fashion, Marks & Spencer

Morning ladies today I thought I'd share with you some of the reasons why I love Marks & Spencer.  From their amazing food hall - yes I could quite happily do my weekly food shop there - have you found their bake in the oven cookies in the freezer section?  Oh my goodness you just have to try them!

To their lingerie, which must be a British institution - I bet most of us have at least one set if not all our underwear from good old Marks.  To their homeware & of course their clothing - there's always something that makes me want to 'click the button'.

I've always been a long term devotee in terms of their underwear & yes I may dabble in the occasional new brand but I always return, as you know what you're going to get - well made, reasonable priced lingerie that will wash & wear well.  As you probably know by now I love my neutrals - grey, black, navy with a splash of white are definitely the 'go to' colours in my wardrobe but what might surprise you is that where my underwear is concerned I love to go bright & bold & Marks offer lingerie in a whole host of gorgeous colours.

My favourite set & style has to be their Eyelash Lace, of which I own a fair few different colours.  So when I was asked my Marks to choose some new wardrobe essentials naturally I picked the navy version, which as you can see from the above image is a lovely soft light navy blue.

One of the reasons I love this design, apart from the pretty lace detailing is that I find it gives the most flattering shape.  Underwired with padded cups it has a plunge neckline & is just perfect for wearing under 'V' neck tops, even quite low ones without having to worry about any lace or bra showing.

Now I'm often asked about strapless bras & I have for years worn this design but this year I fancied something a little bit prettier as generally when we go on holiday I end up just wearing my strapless bras in nude & black & miss the femininity of my lace ones.

So I thought the below ones looked perfect.  Now I won't share a picture of me wearing this new underwear but I've been road testing it for a few days & can confirm that they're just as good as my old ones.  Providing a great shape & support with no movement or slippage & they even come with removable straps.  And of course they feel a lot more femine to wear so a definite thumbs up from me, so much so they're firmly on my packing list.

my midlife fashion, marks and spencer all over lace bandeau strapless bra, marks and spencer lace brazilian pants

Lace Brazilian Pants - currently on offer on 3 for 2!

Naturally, as a lover of interiors I also love Mark's homeware & can happily spend a couple of hours drooling over their latest interior catalogue getting inspiration & drawing up wish lists.  If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you'll have seen how I've recently purchased quite a few vintage blue & white vases from local vinatge flea markets & have gradually been changing over the pink accent in our kitchen to blue.  So when I spotted the below mugs I just knew they'd be perfect for continuing the theme.  Plus & this is a big plus they're made from china.  Now I will admit to in the past just rolling my eyes when my mum used to say how she didn't like drinking tea out of a mug or cup if it wasn't china as it didn't taste right but guess what she's totally right!  It does taste different & sooooo much better.  Plus of course these mugs are very pretty & something a little bit different to your normal style & of course they make me very happy just to look at (yes I am that shallow!).

Saloon Footed Blue Mug

Seeing as I love all things interior as well as fashion I thought I'd also share a few of my favourite picks from Marks & Spencer's homeware section - some of which I've already purchased & some of which are on my 'to get' list.

Interiors, my midlife fashion, marks and spencer, marks and spencer glass and metal hurricane candleholder, marks and spencer 12 piece blackberry floral dinner set, marks and spencer sorbet dish, marks and spencer trapunto bedspread, marks and spencer trapunto cushion, marks and spencer square urn table lamp, marks and spencer classic bouquet mercury vase, marks and spencer daria photo frame, marks and spencer bloomsbury champagne trug

Glass & Metal Hurricane Candleholder, smaller version available here
Classic Bouquet Mercury Vase

Of course I couldn't do a Marks & Spencer post without highlighting my favourite 'new into store' pieces, showcased below.  As with each month there's some great pieces if you take a peek & their full 'new in' collection can be seen here.

Top Picks, my midlife fashion, marks and spencer, new in, marks and spencer pure cashmere ballet wrap cardigan, marks and spencer pure cotton striped long sleeve blouse, marks and spencer pleated round neck vest top, marks and spencer textured one button jacket, marks and spencer pure cotton broderie pinafore shell top, marks and spencer long ruffle a line skirt, marks and spencer v neck vest top, marks and spencer navy pu biker jacket, marks and spencer pure cotton cutwork bell sleeve blouse

None of the above probably need much explanation as to why they've made it into this month's top picks - from a navy biker jacket - so useful & such a fab price.  To an ever useful pretty white top - well we can never have enough can we?! ;-)  To simple & timeless 'V' neck tops for dressing up or down.  To the stunning broderie cami, which will look perfect teamed with denim.  Not to mention an elegant cashmere ballet wrap for wearing on it's own with jeans or layering with a lace trim cami to a striped long sleeve blouse, which is very similar to an old H&M one hanging in my wardrobe that I've found so useful.  And finally of course a maxi navy skirt that will be perfect teamed with trainers & a biker come the cooler weather.

Now I've been luckily enough to be able to choose several pieces to style - so what did I pick?  Well there was never any doubt in my mind that I'd pick this casual jacket. This for me is the perfect 'dress down' jacket for teaming with jeans & trainers & will seriously come into it's own in early Autumn layered with a scarf & is the equivalent to Spring's shacket.  Definitely one of those items you wondered how you managed without once it's hanging in your wardrobe & being textured but plain you can easily customise it with a brooch as I've done below or perhaps if you want a smarter look even change the buttons for brass ones.  I've gone for a size 8 & would say it's fairly true to size but if you want more of a fitted feel consider sizing down a size.

Jacket - Marks & Spencer
Shirt - J Crew, similar here
Brooch - Vintage Chanel from Vestiaire
Bag - Iris & Ink, similar here

My second choice is this timeless cashmere ballet wrap, which I was a little worried would be too short in the body as I hate to feel as if there's the slightest chance of exposing my tummy but I needn't have worried.  Dress up with leather trousers or cigarette pants & heels or down with a lace cami, boyfriend jeans & trainers.  I don't know why but I've always fancied a ballet wrap style cardigan so when I saw they were available in cashmere, which will also be ideal come the cooler weather it was a definite must for me.  Although saying that I don't know why I've always fancied one I think it might have something to do with the fact when my sister & I were little & having ballet lessons my mum started knitted us ballet wraps - my sister's got finished buy mine never did & I don't think I've ever got over the missed opportunity to style one :-0  So mum if you're reading this you've scarred me for life ;-) lol!  Size wise I'm wearing the small & it's fitted but not in a clingy kind of way.

In the past year I've fallen back in love with skirts & in particular during Autumn & Winter.  I think it probably has something to do with my love of trainers.  So when I spotted this navy (also available in black) maxi ruffle skirt I thought it would be perfect for teaming with a biker & trainers for a smarter casual everyday look.  Just to give you an indication of the length, I'm 5'7" & I'm wearing a size 8 & 36" length.

My midlife fashion, marks and spencer, golden goose superstar low top leather trainers, massimo dutti leather biker jacket, j crew stripe linen tank tee, marks and spencer long ruffle a line skirt,

This next item is something I've been contemplating for the last year or so & I've finally taken the plunge as I think this is going to be so useful on holiday.  Now I love wearing a straw panama but one serious drawback is when you're on your sunlounger & want to read.  It can't just be me who ends up tilting their head forward so that they don't crush the rear of the brim?!  So I reckon this visor is going to be the answer to my prayers but could have the one downside of me falling asleep even more in the sun as I'll be so much more relaxed & comfy :-0

My midlife fashion, marks and spencer braid visor summer hat

The final piece of clothing is something I'm wearing today & that's this lovely broderie tie camisole.  I seem to be having a bit of a pink love in at the moment & it reminded me of the white Monsoon one I've recently purchased & love.  Perfect for those warmer summer days, whether you team it with denim shorts, white trousers or jeans.  I'm wearing a size 8 & again would say it's pretty  true to size.

So ladies do you see anything that appeals in this month's picks?  Perhaps like me you can always find a few gems in Marks & Spencer & have your eye on a few items I've not featured.  How about their underwear & homeware are you a fan?  As always I'd love to hear your thoughts & views.

Just before I leave you a quick tip - you know how Mark's Insolia shoes are just so much more comfy due to their padded soles & reduced pressure on your feet?  Well check out these Foot Cushions.  I've popped a pair in a couple of my shoes & they seriously make a difference.  So much so I'm going to be purchasing a few more.

After a busy day yesterday it's a quiet one for us & I'm thinking the sofa definitely has my name on it for a cheeky snooze mid afternoon :-)

As always enjoy your Sunday ladies & I'll be back in the morning.
