The Case of the Flopping Scarf!

Right in my last blog I mentioned I'd had another 'brainwave', this time involving the use of starch & whilst I know the 'excitement' of my big reveal will have been keeping a lot (by which I mean none) of you awake at night I can now put you all out of your misery!

As a child I can remember Mum getting the can of starch out every time the ironing board came out but I have a confession to make & that is I have never used or purchased a can of starch in my life, well not until Saturday that is! Which no doubt means my halo has slipped further & is another of my failings in the wife/mother department. However, I have now rectified (one) of my many failings by buying said can although confession number two, the starch isn't to be used on hubby's or the teenager's collars!

Having worn my new yellow Zara scarf last week for the first time, I was gutted to see that over the course of the day said scarf drooped until it had finally gone all limp & ended up reassembling a failed soufflé! As I love this scarf especially it's bright yellow colour & envisage getting a lot more wear out of it, I decided that I would need to rack my brain for ideas in how to make said scarf stiffer. Well it took several hours but eventually the light bulb moment occurred & I remembered starch & wondered if this could possibly be the equivalent of Viagra for my scarf?

So said can of starch was brought & said scarf sprayed & wait for it (insert dramatic pause X-Factor style) I can confirm that the experiment was a success!

Now firstly being the slummy mummy that I am, I did try to get away without ironing the scarf & simply covering the scarf & the environment with a ton of spray.  This worked to an extent & initially I was pleased let alone relieved that the iron wouldnt have to come out but after about an hour it also began to droop.  So seeing as I had started this experiment I thought in the interest of research I might as well finish it & proceeded to drag the iron and ironing board out & cover the scarf in a load more starch & the result is just what I was after. The scarf doesnt feel stiff or scratchy but has a little more body to it so that it drapes and falls better. I may even give it a second spray and iron next time the iron is out although having not used starch before am worried that I may end up with a scarf resembling the white one Russ Abbot used to wear when he was dressed as a pilot!

As you will see from the pictures I think it was definitely worth the effort.

  1. I am in your (prior) slummy mummy camp in that I have NEVER owned a can of starch but HELLO! I see a new trend happening right now ... what a great idea! I am guilty of the deflated scarf look by 3pm!

Look absolutely stunning as always. When are Zara going to knock on your door for some modelling?

    1. Thanks Jo, yes those grey jeans are one of my favourite pairs :) Looks like I might need to get a second can of starch as I've nearly finished the first can after doing a whole of batch of scarves!

  6. I love spray starch and yes I use it though I've never tried it on my scarves as yet. I do have a couple of scarves which are on the wrong side of soft and floppy and like you say - could do with the extra body - I will give this a whirl and thanks for the idea.
