Westbury Blazer - get 15% off with code MIDLIFEFASHION217
Morning ladies I think one thing we all would like to get down to a fine art is capsule dressing/wardrobes. You know the sort of thing where you just own a beautifully edited wardrobe that mixes & matches & whilst not extensive you can always stand in front of & find something to wear. Yup, I believe these do exist! Just picture it now - a streamlined wardrobe where everything has it's place, isn't crammed onto a rail that if you place one more hanger onto it, it will break & that contains clothes that don't come out creased due to the sheer volume of clothes hanging up.
I strongly believe that as we improve with age (much like a fine wine ;-) ) so does our taste in clothes - we know what suits us, what style we want to portray & parts of our bodies we want to hide. As well as generally having that little bit more disposable income to invest in tailored classics that will not only stand the test of time but have a better cut & are made for a better quality/heavier fabric that won't crease & will fall & drape beautifully.
I'm definitely in the process of reducing the amount of clothing hanging in my wardrobe & now have a strict one in & at least one out policy when buying something new. Plus I'm really trying to buy less & spend a little more on pieces I know are my go to staples with less on disposable, trend set clothing, which of course still has it place in every wardrobe but is generally only going to be worn one or two seasons.
So when Baukjen asked me if I'd be interested in picking 3 pieces from their current season to style I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to show just how my picks could form the basis of a capsule wardrobe.
So let's start with the 3 pieces. Well firstly as you can see from above I went for a blazer - no surprise there considering my love & huge weakness for a tailored jacket. As you'll know from my daily outfit posts blazers are along with a biker jacket my 'go to' in terms of daily wear. Whether that's dressing it up with cigarette pants, a cami & heels for a night out or teaming with a simple tailored shirt & jeans & some form of flat shoewear for the day I pretty much live in them.
Now I'd never tried any of Baukjen's blazers before I received this one & yes whilst they are more expensive than some high street brands I have to say as soon as I put the jacket on I can honestly say you get what you pay for. The tailoring, fit & cut of this blazer are spot on. In fact on the evening of the day it arrived, when I was showing hubby his first comment when he saw the blazer on me was what a great fit & cut it was & that's when I was just throwing it on quickly.
In terms of weight of the blazer I'd say it's something you could probably wear all year round. Not too heavy for Spring/Summer but equally I'm planning on layering with cashmere & thermals & a big scarf come the colder months. Plus it has a very flattering longline length & I would say true to size.
Thompson Striped Shirt - get 15% off with code MIDLIFEFASHION217
My second pick is this fitted striped shirt, because as much as we all love a breton or two, I don't think you can beat a fitted striped shirt, especially when it comes in this stunning shade of blue, which I always get drawn to as I think it always looks so fresh. Perfect for wearing to work with cigarette pants as much as it is with jeans & trainers not to mention if longer in length as a coverup on holiday, or teamed with denim cut offs & a panama for a timeless summertime look.
This shirt is slightly longer in length so perfect for layering over leather leggings or as I've already mentioned denim cuts offs, with the fabric having a slight stretch & is a tailored fit. So whilst it gives the impression of a boyfriend shirt it has more shape & definition than a lot of the normal oversized shirts that can end up looking like they're wearing you as opposed to the other way round.
In terms of sizing I would say this comes up slighly large as I ended up sizing down.
Boyfriend Jean - get 15% off with code MIDLIFEFASHION217
And for my third item it had to be a pair of jeans as I think most of us probably spend more time wearing denim than we do anything else. I picked their boyfriend jean because their description of them having 'a tapered leg.......so you don't look like you've borrowed his' really appealed to me, as I think half the battle with finding a good boyfriend jean is finding a pair that are still relatively fitted in the leg to give style & an element of tailoring.
Now I don't think the above picture off Baukjen's website does these jeans any justice. The denim is actually a lighter & softer blue & they just look a lot nicer & better in real life. In terms of whether the description met with the fit I would say it does. There's a good amount of stretch but not too much that you're worried they're going to loose their shape & the jeans have a lovely tailored fit to them without being skinny. If you imagine a cross between a boyfriend & straight legged jean you'd be on the right tracks. Although like with the shirt I ended up going down a size in these as I just felt they might start to feel too big after a couple of wears & as I've already mentioned I preferred a little bit more of a straighter fit on the leg. I've gone for the regular length, which fall just above my ankle bone but if you're taller than me (5'7") I would recommend going for the longer length.
So those are my 3 picks for the start of a capsule wardrobe but how could you style them to ensure that they earn their keep?
Well that's simples. Firstly all 3 pieces make a great outfit when worn together. Secondly each item can easily be dressed up or down making them extremely versatile. Thirdly if you're anything like me & find most your wardrobe contains clothing that's either grey, black, blue, white or cream with the odd splash of khaki & colour then they're also going to go with pretty much everything hanging in it.
Just to show you how versatile I've put together a few different outfits for each item, which as you'll see from the below example not only do any of the tops go with the Westbury Blazer you could also mix & match any of the bottoms or shoes with any of the tops too to create quite a few different looks.
